'The Air We Breathe' was a curatorial project framed by the narrative of a proposed Energy from Waste (EFW) incinerator in East Tullos (Torry) Aberdeen. Which despite continued local objections has been voted through by the city council. This narrative raised urgent questions:
What happens when power structures position this system as a solution for climate change targets?
How do we imagine a future living here if the incinerator is built? Torry is an area with significant health and social inequalities.
What are our capabilities for protest in contemporary, neoliberal societies. Who is listening?
The Air We Breathe generated new commissions from artists and supported existing citizen science collaborations in Aberdeen. This included 'The Thick and The Sticky' by artist Yvette Bathgate and the 'DIY Air pollution monitor' workshop by designers Kevin Mulhern and Ben Durack and activist David Fryer. The project culminated in a final exhibition at Gray's School of Art and included the work 'Burning Questions' from artist Alison Scott.
In addition to the artists activity, Gray's School of Art was opened up to the activist groups as a space to meet and organise.
